How to make a custom matchbox

A few of you have asked for a more detailed tutorial on how to make a custom matchbox after seeing my TikTok.

Usually to get custom matchboxes you have to order in bulk but if you want to get crafty you can make your own.

These personalised matchboxes are a great way to add a little extra charm to your space. They're perfect for giving your coffee table an eclectic, nostalgic vibe while also adding a unique, handcrafted touch.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x Matchbox
  • A4 Card (ideally 250-300gsm)
  • Craft Knife
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Matchbox striker stickers (order from amazon or cut off original matchbox)
  • iPad / computer (I use procreate app to design but you could use Canva or something similar)
  • Printer

Download a free template here. Note: I only have templates for the specific matchbox brands I have used (Swan-UK / Beehive-NZ)

If you have a different brand, you can make your own template

  1. Remove the tray from the sleeve and undo the sleeve so you can lay it flat.
  2. I then take a photo of the original matchbox sleeve and use a coin for size reference to match up when I load the image into procreate. OR if you have adobe / another software you may be able to measure the existing matchbox & enter the dimensions.
  3. Draw around the edges & folds to create your template on a separate layer & then delete the photo. Now you have a template.
  4. Then for the fun part, draw your design! Pop onto my Pintrest board if you want some inspo.
  5. Print your design on to card thick enough to hold its shape.
  6. Cut and fold the design, glue one edge to create your matchbox sleeve. Inset the inner tray of the matchbox and adjust if needed so it’s snug fit.
  7. I brought some ‘adhesive matchbox stiker paper’ from Amazon which I cut to size and stuck to both sides of my matchbox BUT you could also cut the matchbox striker off the original box and glue to your new custom one.
